Joe is a loyal Bluenoser, born and educated in Antigonish N.S.  He had an interest in trains from a very early age watching the trains passing by across the harbour from his home.  After graduating Business College he took a seasonal job with the CPR Extra Gang repairing the tracks in N.S and N.B. He then spent ten years in the RCAF communications.  During that period he served with the NATO Forces, Germany.  While in the Armed Forces he got married when station in Newfoundland and is the proud father of two wonderful sons. After taking his discharge in Ottawa he moved to Toronto as Tim Horton's Executive Officer and started Tim's Donut business.  Railway travel was always his interest. When offered a job with a new CNR train concept "The Turbo" he became a railroader.  Joe joined VIA in 1978, and held a number of positions from Customer & Catering Instructor to Food Service Quality Control Officer. Due to VIA cutbacks he took early retirement in 1990 and say's he had more spare time for himself when he was working full time.  He was elected President, VIA Rail Pensioners' Association (Ontario) in April 2008 and hopes to make a meaningful contribution.  It's great to still be involved with railroad colleagues.   Click to return to main page

Joe est né et éduqué à Antigonish Nouvelle-Écosse.  Alors qu’il était jeune un de ses passe-temps était de regarder de chez lui les trains qui manœuvraient sur les quais du port.  Après avoir gradué du Collège commercial il s’engageât au CPR dans un travail saisonnier sur la maintenance des voies en Nouvelle-Écosse et au Nouveau-Brunswick. Il a servi dix ans dans les Forces armées de l’air du Canada dans la branche des communications, au cours de cet intervalle il servit avec les forces de l’OTAN en Allemagne.  Durant son service avec l’armée de l’air il fût cantonné à Terre-Neuve ou il se maria.  Lui et son épouse sont les fiers parents de deux beaux grand garçons. Après sa démobilisation à Ottawa il s’installe à Toronto et travaille comme Chef de direction chez Tim Horton et participât au lancement de la division des Beignes Tim Horton.  Le CN lui offrit du travail avec la venue du Turbo qui était un nouveau concept ferroviaire.  Il joint VIA en 1978 où il occupe différent postes au Services à la clientèle comme instructeur et à l’assurance qualité. Suite aux réductions du personnel Joe prend une retraite prématurée en 1990; aujourd’hui il mentionne qu’il avait plus de temps pour lui alors qu’il travaillait. En avril 2008 il est élu Président de l’Association des retraités de VIA Rail Canada section Ontario et il espère y apporter sa contribution.  Il fait bon de rester en contact avec les anciens collègues.
